SHIB is on the verge of bringing an unprecedented utility case for crypto: a DNS-compliant top level domain.

  • SHIB bridges the gap between Web2 and Web3 via top-level domains (TLDs).
  • Available on a first-come, first-served basis, SHIB domains are up for Early Access.
  • SHIB devs plan to support SHIBDentity for all products across the SHIB Ecosystem.

According to an update from D3, a domain name startup and the newest partner of Shiba Inu, SHIB’s decentralized identity crusade continues in full swing. While Shiba Name Service (SNS) was introduced to the SHIB Army in late October, SHIB partnered with D3 just a week ago.

The Shiba Name Service was set to replace the traditional complex addresses of the crypto sphere, like ‘0xCD4….’ with name addresses, such as DailyCoin.SHIB.

However, Shiba Inu’s decentralization quest encountered another common problem: the easy-to-remember addresses won’t work across regular internet browsers, email clients, and other popular Web2 applications. That’s because .Shib addresses are not rooted in the domain name system (DNS), encompassing all regular .com addresses.

To tackle the issue, SHIB partnered with D3 to apply for a DNS-approved name address, also called a Top Level Domain (TLD).

How to Join the Top-Level Domain Name Revolution

Besides being more memorable than regular cryptocurrency addresses, a Top Level Domain can benefit the vast and vibrant community of Shiba Inu holders. The .Shib address can dramatically reduce the margin for error, while a decentralized and self-sovereign digital identity brings more clearance into messaging systems, avoiding spam.

To obtain a customized .SHIB Top Level Domain (TLD), crypto enthusiasts need to head to d3.app/SHIB and pre-register by putting in their email address. After this is done, the next step would be to press “Save Your Spot” and confirm the registration via email.

Users can already see which domain names are reserved and which are still free. While the reservation is not open yet, Web3 enthusiasts can secure their chosen domain name by pressing “Remind Me When Early Access Begins.”

On the Flipside

  • Successfully applying for a Top Level Domain (TLD) could be a daunting task, as many technicalities are considered.
  • For example, Ethereum’s native .ETH Web3 addresses would have a hard time applying, as .ETH coincides with the code for Ethiopia.

Why This Matters

Acquiring a Domain Name System (DNS) compliant web address would significantly boost the operability between traditional internet and blockchain technology.
