News about the hack first emerged on August 23 at about 9:41 AM (GMT+3) when a user on X (Twitter) reported seeing scam links being shared on Polygon’s announcements channel in Discord. The network’s Chief Information Security Officer, Mudit Gupta, confirmed the breach a few minutes later, warning users to avoid clicking on the dubious links until further notice.

Almost three hours later, Gupta issued another update, noting that the Polygon team had regained access to the compromised community Discord server.

The blockchain network’s official account also appeared to reassure Polygon users that they could use the server again while a thorough security review was underway.

“All external bots and integrations have been disabled while we perform a security review of each of them to avoid this from happening again. Some features may be limited for a while, but you are free to use the server once again,” the post read.

While the extent of the hack’s damage wasn’t officially quantified, one Polygon user identified as ValidatorK claimed to have lost about 117,000 MATIC and 30 ETH due to the security incident.

The user lamented that Polygon took longer to “make the issue official,” urging the blockchain platform to implement appropriate compensation procedures for the damages caused by “its failure to notify users” about the hack quickly. Polygon’s X account confirmed the breach nearly seven hours after Gupta’s first update.

Meanwhile, Gupta clarified that the Discord server was breached despite the Polygon team securing all its privileged accounts with two-factor authentication (2FA). He said the attack likely emanated from a compromised bot or integration.
