Coinbase says its systems were not breached, but a security incident at analytics provider Amplitude exposed contact information tied to a subset of the exchange’s customers, renewing concern over phishing risks in the crypto sector.

Figures circulating on October 28 claimed that more than 70,000 users were affected. Coinbase has not confirmed that figure, describing the affected population only as a small subset of customers and attributing the exposure to its third-party vendor rather than an intrusion into Coinbase’s own infrastructure.

Contact data can still create a serious risk

There is no indication in the available reports that customer funds, account credentials or private wallet keys were compromised. Yet names, email addresses and other contact details can give scammers the raw material for tailored fraud attempts.

Hackers can use legitimate-looking customer data to make fake support requests, security warnings or account-verification messages more convincing. For exchange users, that means an unexpected email, call or text claiming to be from Coinbase deserves particular scrutiny, even if it contains personal information that appears authentic.

Third-party exposure remains an industry problem

Coinbase has faced a separate security episode before. In May 2025, criminals bribed overseas support personnel to obtain customer information, an incident the company said could result in reimbursement and remediation costs of as much as $400 million.

The methods differ, but both cases put attention on the same operational risk: sensitive customer information often passes through employees and outside service providers, not just a platform’s core trading systems.

Coinbase’s latest disclosure arrives amid broader concern over data leaks affecting crypto businesses and wallet users. Such incidents do not automatically mean a platform’s custody technology has failed, but they can expose holders to targeted social engineering long after a technical breach is contained.
