April 2, 2024, went down in the history books of El Salvador as hundreds of gleeful graduates in San Salvador celebrated their Bitcoin Diploma graduation. Initiated back in 2021, when the country took a brave turn towards adopting Bitcoin (BTC) as legal tender, the Mi Primer Bitcoin educational non-profit organization launched its BTC education program in June 2022.

Since then, the Bitcoin Diploma program has received support from the Ministry of Education, released an open-source workbook for financial literacy, and welcomed thousands of students. A special tutoring program for educators has been launched to prepare 1,000 qualified teachers nationwide.
Available on GitHub, Mi Primer Bitcoin’s financial literacy workbook has helped students across 18 countries via The Node Network program launched in March 2023. The educational book encompasses various topics, ranging from the nature of money to the specifics of Bitcoin mining by renewable resources.
Bitcoin Graduates Tested on the Spot
Before the graduation party took off, students in San Bartolo were asked to verify their digital money skills with test transactions using the Bitcoin Lightning network. These included tasks like creating a backup wallet, receiving money with a QR code, and some basic Bitcoin knowledge questions. The questions were prepared by the BTC Advisors, who are developers, engineers, and finance professionals.
After the verifiers completed their mission, 120 students in San Bartolo received their Bitcoin Diplomas, inspiring them to continue their education with Bitcoin as a tool for their futures. The students celebrated their accomplishments with a gala dinner and an ensuing charity mission. “This doesn’t mark the end of their learning curve. This means a new beginning!” reads Mi Primer Bitcoin’s tweet on Graduation Day.
On the Flipside
- Bitcoin’s acceptance as a payment method is rather niche in El Salvador, as just above 20% of merchants are known to accept Bitcoin (BTC).
- Tourist attractions like Bitcoin Beach have the highest BTC adoption rate despite the goal of balancing the infrastructure in rural areas.
Why This Matters
El Salvador adopted a pioneering approach towards blockchain technology in 2021, aiming to educate the nation’s residents and attract foreign talent.
