DBS Bank has pointed to XRP’s Ecosystem as the most practical way to link digital value and existing payment flows, a development that continues to sit alongside separate efforts by networks such as the XRP Ledger to improve institutional settlement efficiency.
A Shared Layer for Tokenised Deposits
SWIFT designed the ledger as a real-time record that sequences and validates transactions while leaving final settlement on banks’ existing rails.
The first live use case focuses on 24/7 cross-border payments using bank-issued tokenised deposits. Early participants include DBS, BNP Paribas, HSBC, Citi, Standard Chartered and others, with the crypto project moving from concept to operational testing in less than a year.

The approach prioritises interoperability over replacement. For SWIFT, XRP tied banks can offer always-on capabilities and better liquidity visibility without abandoning the compliance and risk controls already built into correspondent banking via the ISO 20022 compliance framework.
Interoperability Remains the Shared Goal
In a recent comment, DBS described the Swift ledger as a tool for connecting tokenised deposits, digital assets and international payments into a smoother customer experience.
The emphasis on linking rather than competing with current infrastructure mirrors a long-standing theme in institutional blockchain discussions.
Networks built for cross-border settlement, including the XRP Ledger, have similarly stressed the need for reliable liquidity and reduced friction between traditional finance and on-chain systems.
While SWIFT’s ledger currently coordinates bank-controlled tokenised deposits rather than public-chain assets, the parallel focus on practical interoperability keeps both approaches relevant as institutions explore hybrid models.
Measured Progress in Institutional Infras
SWIFT’s ledger does not issue or settle digital assets itself. It provides an orchestration layer so banks can move tokenised value under existing rules. Further features are expected to develop based on feedback from the more than 40 institutions involved in its design.
Projects such as those tied to the XRP Ledger remain part of the broader conversation about how different settlement networks can coexist as tokenised deposits and digital assets gain traction inside regulated banking channels.
