A former SWIFT standards veteran with more than 27 years at the messaging network says ISO 20022 gives banks a practical way to handle digital assets without rebuilding their back offices.

At the same time, Ripple Treasury’s documented partnerships with SWIFT keep XRP in the conversation as traditional and blockchain rails continue to overlap.

Former SWIFT Expert on Why ISO 20022 Matters

Tom Alaerts, who spent the bulk of his career working on the standards that underpin global payments, has pushed back on the idea that blockchain will simply replace SWIFT.

In a recent conversation with SMQKE, the popular blockchain researcher, he argued that decades of trust, security, neutrality & governance still make the cooperative hard to displace.

What has changed, he said, is the standard itself. Updates around 2022 and 2023 made it easier to represent digital token identifiers, blockchain addresses & higher numerical precision inside the securities messages banks already use.

That means institutions can process tokenized assets through existing systems rather than standing up entirely new infrastructure.

Networks That Speak The Same Language Get an Edge

SWIFT’s Tom Alaerts noted that ISO-compliant networks and fintechs face fewer hurdles when banks and central-bank systems evaluate them.

Because they already use terminology and data structures familiar to traditional finance, security reviews, resilience testing, and regulatory checks become less friction-heavy.

He fundamentally expects a hybrid environment in which traditional messaging and blockchain settlement coexist rather than one displacing the other.

For digital assets, SWIFT networks that already map cleanly to ISO 20022, that hybrid path is shorter.

Another SWIFT – Ripple related discussion has focused on Ripple Treasury, the platform that emerged after Ripple’s acquisition of GTreasury. Materials highlight strategic partnerships with leading banks, SWIFT, Refinitiv & other providers to support end-to-end corporate treasury workflows.

The platform sits inside SWIFT’s Certified Partner Program and offers connectivity options such as Alliance Lite2 along with tools for IBAN and ABA lookups. It also lets corporate users manage both traditional fiat balances and digital assets including XRP and RLUSD in one place.

The connection is at the treasury-platform level rather than a direct pipe from the XRP Ledger into SWIFT messaging, but it still places XRP inside a workflow that already touches the network banks rely on daily.

Convergence Without Replacement

Taken together, the two threads point to the same practical outcome: banks do not need to abandon existing rails to experiment with digital assets.

SWIFT’s ISO 20022 gold standard supplies a shared language, while platforms such as Ripple Treasury supply the operational layer that can sit alongside those rails. SWIFT remains central because of the trust and governance already built around it.

Networks and assets that align with the standard, and that appear inside the tools corporate treasurers already use, are simply better positioned as the two systems continue to converge.
