  • Crypto meme icon Kabosu has passed away.
  • Kabosu rose to fame in 2010 after her picture went viral online.
  • Her owner penned an emotional poem to bid her goodbye.

Kabosu, the Japanese Shiba Inu who inspired the “doge” meme trend and eventually became the face of Dogecoin, has passed away peacefully, her owner, Atsuko Sato, announced on Friday.

Rescued from an animal shelter in 2008, Kabosu became an internet sensation after a 2010 photo of her with crossed paws and a slight smirk spread on Reddit and Tumblr. This image, captioned by phrases in broken English and Comic Sans font, inspired crypto meme culture and became Dogecoin’s official logo in 2013.

“To all of you who loved Kabosu, on the morning of the 24 May, Kabosu crossed the rainbow bridge. Thank you all so much for your support over the years,” Sato wrote. “She went very peacefully without suffering, as if falling asleep while feeling the warmth of my hands petting her.”

Per the blog post, Kabosu’s farewell party will be held at Flower Kaori in Kotsu no Mori, Narita City on May 26, after which Sato plans to organize a fun farewell party at Sakura Furusato Hiroba “when the weather gets cooler.”

Kabosu passed away at 18, leaving a permanent mark in the crypto industry. By being part of Dogecoin’s success, Kabosu has inspired viral dog-themed tokens that have birthed vibrant crypto communities, such as Shiba Inu (SHIB) and FLOKI.
