
The quantum threat used to be the crypto equivalent of “we’ll figure it out later.” Now chains are racing to look prepared, and the difference between talking about it and actually doing it is getting harder to ignore.
A recent side-by-side comparison between Algorand and Sei Network makes the gap pretty obvious. One side has live mainnet transactions and a concrete roadmap. The other has a draft proposal and bandwidth warnings.
Why Algorand’s Head-Start Isn’t Subtle
Algorand has been running Falcon signatures (a NIST-selected post-quantum scheme) on mainnet since November 2025. More than 140,000 quantum-resistant transactions have already been processed. That’s not a testnet flex or a whitepaper promise — it’s live network activity while most competitors are still drafting press releases.

Native protocol-level Falcon accounts are scheduled for Q3 2026, with the smaller Falcon-512 variant expected by the end of the year. Coverage is designed to extend beyond wallets into consensus, staking, and multisig. The stated target for broad protocol resilience sits at the end of 2027.
Signature sizes land between 640 and 1,280 bytes depending on the variant — noticeably leaner than some of the alternatives being floated elsewhere.
Sei’s SIP-5: Smart Idea, Still On Paper
Sei’s response is SIP-5, a draft proposal that lets users bind an ML-DSA-44 key to their existing EVM address. No fund movement, no address change, continuity preserved. On paper it looks clean and user-friendly.
The catch? It’s still a draft from July 2026, open for community discussion, and not on mainnet. Signature size clocks in at 2,420 bytes. Sei’s own documentation notes that full post-quantum signatures could balloon bandwidth demands dramatically at high throughput — potentially from 13 MB/s to as much as 1.57 GB/s at 200k TPS.
The proposal is framed as an emergency-ready fallback while longer-term research continues.
The Key Diff Between ALGO & SEI
Sei chain is solving for seamless EOA-level continuity and keeping the door open for future performance improvements. Algorand is already running the cryptography in production and expanding it across the protocol stack.
One approach prioritizes minimal disruption for existing users. The other prioritizes getting quantum-resistant security live and then building outward. Both have merits. Only one currently has the receipts of actual mainnet usage measured in six figures of transactions.
Why This Matters For Algorand
In an effervescent market that loves narratives, “we already did it” carries more weight than “we have a thoughtful plan.” Algorand’s early Falcon deployment and the clear 2026–2027 milestones give it a tangible talking point that most chains still lack. Whether that technical lead translates into sustained attention or capital is a separate question — but the lead itself is real.
Quantum computing still isn’t tomorrow’s problem. It is, however, the kind of long-term risk that institutions and serious builders eventually price in. Chains that treat it as optional marketing will look different from the ones that treated it as engineering homework years earlier.
Algorand has already turned in part of the assignment. The rest of the class is still sharpening their pencils.
