  • Leading web3 gaming platform ImmutableX has announced a new wallet and authentication solution called Immutable Passport.
  • The solution aims to improve scalability by improving onboarding for Web3 games.

ImmutableX, an Ethereum Layer-2 solution targeted towards scaling Web3 games, has announced that it is launching Immutable Passport, a secure onboarding solution catered towards game studios.

The platform has shared that it is keen on enabling game studios to help gamers secure their identities and allow them to travel across the Web3 ecosystem seamlessly.

Making Games More Scalable

The platform’s existing solution, Magic, is currently leveraged by most upcoming gaming startups for smoother onboarding. However, the Immutable Passport will be the newest addition to the ImmutableX tool arsenal, making onboarding easier for game studios.

The Immutable Passport is a wallet and authentication tool that streamlines players’ onboarding through passwordless sign-on and automatic wallet creation. This non-custodial solution doesn’t compromise users’ private keys and is not involved in signing transactions.

The Passport will allow game studios to drive mainstream adoption, maintain high security, and access valuable player metrics. On the user end, players gain access to a digital wallet that protects against fraud and enables seamless authentication across Immutable’s extensive list of Web3 games and marketplaces.

While the tool is scheduled to be debuted in April 2023, studios and developers can begin integration today.

Immutable flagship exclusives Guild of Guardians and Gods Unchained are reported to be among the first games that will be integrating the Immutable Passport at launch.

The authentication solution results from ImmutableX’s extensive research on ease of onboarding, security, and plug-and-play features. Its research team concluded that the aforementioned factors are top priorities for upcoming development studios making games.

Robbie Ferguson, Immutable President and Co-Founder, shared in a press release,

"For web3 gaming to reach a billion players, onboarding must be invisible, secure, and work across any game - mobile, console, or desktop. Until now, security and friction have been tradeoffs. Passport is a self-custodial wallet where users can sign in with just an email and one-time password - it will be a game changer for players and radically reduce user acquisition costs. More than that, just like a Gamertag or a Steam account, Immutable Passport offers unified identity, transaction, and authentication functionalities that simply haven't existed in the web3 gaming space until now. We can't wait to introduce our partners to the power of Immutable Passport."

On the Flipside

  • Most games on the ImmutableX platform rely on Magic Link to provide a secure passwordless entry to games.
  • With the launch of the Immutable Passport scheduled for April 2023, it has yet to be determined what happens to ImmutableX’s partnership with Magic to provide Magic Link.

Why You Should Care

Web2 is already very interoperable and interconnected thanks to social media, email, and big tech companies controlling most platforms. Users today can make an account anywhere with their Gmail, Twitter, Apple, or Facebook profiles.

ImmutableX’s solution strives for a similar seamless process by leveraging Web3 components, promoting scalability and interoperability in the Web3 ecosystem.
