  • Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) has issued a warning over impersonators.
  • The former executive is fresh out of jail.
  • CZ has hinted at a near return into the spotlight.

Changpeng Zhao (CZ), the founder and former CEO of crypto exchange Binance has been in headlines in recent weeks, following his release from a four-month prison sentence last month. However, the renewed attention around the former executive hasn’t been without its challenges, with a surge of deepfake impersonators emerging, aiming to exploit the buzz surrounding him for malicious purposes.

The growing trend has now prompted warnings from CZ himself.

Binance Founder CZ Sounds Alarm on Clones

Fresh-out-of-jail former Binance chief Changpeng Zhao (CZ) has sounded the alarm over a wave of impersonators attempting to capitalize on his name. In a tweet on Monday, October 21, 2024, CZ responded to concerns over certain verified X accounts bearing his name, flagging them as clones.

“Beware of fake “cz” accounts out there,” the former CEO stressed, asserting that any accounts other than his official page are imposters and malicious actors.

One of the fraudulent accounts, which has pulled over 39,000 followers, closely mimics CZ’s official page, copying key details like his profile image and bio.

Zhao’s latest post follows a previous warning about deep fake videos of him circulating on social media, where he urged followers to avoid interacting with fraudulent projects falsely claiming his backing.

In addition to addressing the impersonators, the former Binance chief also responded to questions about his full return to the public eye.

“Just Enjoying My Quiet Time:” Changpeng Zhao

Responding to a follower’s imploration for his complete return to social media, the ousted Binance executive reassured that he would be making a comeback.

Having served nearly 120 days behind bars for violations related to Binance’s anti-money laundering (AML) practices, CZ emphasized that he has been “enjoying his quiet time” post-release.

However, much of his past media engagement was closely tied to Binance, raising questions about what direction he might take now that he is no longer affiliated with the exchange.

Zhao previously hinted at focusing on ventures related to blockchain, AI, and biotechnology investments, and it remains to be seen what paths he will explore upon his return.

On the Flipside

  • Despite his ousting from Binance, Changpeng Zhao remains Binance’s largest shareholder.
  • New Binance CEO Richard Teng recently confirmed that Zhao will not return to the exchange.

Why This Matters

The trend of deepfakes and imposters is becoming increasingly concerning, particularly as they impersonate influential figures. The growing trend poses a major threat to the industry, and former Binance CEO CZ’s warning is a reminder for investors to stay vigilant.
