Cypherium, a permissionless Layer 1 blockchain infrastructure company, has unveiled COLOSSUS-X, a proposed Proof-of-Work (PoW) architecture that would let AI data center operators mine blockchain rewards with GPUs that are idle between AI workloads.

The launch comes as AI data center operators grapple with rising infrastructure, energy, and operating costs. The announcement, however, includes no benchmark results or profitability data.

Turning Idle GPUs Into Mining Capacity

COLOSSUS-X is designed to let AI data centers use idle GPUs for blockchain mining when they are not needed for AI training or inference, potentially generating additional revenue.

Unlike Bitcoin, which relies heavily on specialized ASIC mining hardware, COLOSSUS-X targets AI accelerators and requires a 32 GiB memory dataset that grows by approximately 10% annually. Cypherium says the design aims to reduce the advantage of specialized mining equipment.

“Our broader vision is to connect physical computing power with financial markets, creating new opportunities to monetize and hedge the economics of AI infrastructure,” said Sky Guo, founder of Cypherium, adding that the company’s goal is to turn idle GPU capacity into a revenue-generating asset while supporting blockchain security.

AI Workloads and Mining Under One System

The company also plans to introduce Proof-of-Useful-Training (PoUT), allowing verifiable AI workloads to directly support network consensus.

The roadmap also includes a planned feature “compute reservoir”, which would allow operators to shift computing capacity between AI workloads and mining based on market demand.

A Proposed Index for Compute-Linked Financial Products

To further bridge compute resources with decentralization, the company proposed the Cypherium Compute Index.  The on-chain benchmark tracks computing prices using rental rates, mining economics and data from AI computing markets, laying the groundwork for real-world assets (RWAs) and compute-backed perpetual futures.

In addition to that, the company plans to optimize COLOSSUS-X for AI hardware, activate its dual-consensus system, deploy the compute reservoir and conduct an independent security review. However, these features still remain in development.

Why This Matters

COLOSSUS-X reflects growing interest in linking AI infrastructure economics with blockchain networks, including GPU-friendly mining and compute-linked on-chain products. Its real impact will depend on independent security analysis and real-world performance data.
