Smiling with shiny red laser eyes, Biden used the famed ‘Dark Brandon’ internet meme, which has been used as a lucky charm by many Bitcoin proponents and maximalists, including El Salvador’s re-elected President Nayib Bukele.
The presidential stunt wasn’t left unnoticed, as prominent crypto figures chimed in to give their take on the rather unusual image. For instance, memecoin whale and Blockchain Journalist David Gokhshtein enquired about the likelihood of BTC replacing the United States Dollar (USD).
Meanwhile, Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson assumed that Joe Biden’s account was hacked, while Dogecoin’s creator Shibetoshi Nakamoto remarked, “OK intern, you are promoted.” Michael Michaël van de Poppe, the founder of MN Trading Consultancy, declared, “Finally, he’s announcing the Bitcoin standard. We’re saved!”
Did Biden Switch His Stance on Bitcoin?
Previously, Joe Biden claimed that Bitcoin mining lacks efficiency due to the high carbon emission rates. Indeed, the latest studies on Bitcoin mining emission intensity have shown a stunning 52% in carbon emissions over the last four years.
The scientific study by Bitcoin-dedicated Environmental Specialist Daniel Batten points to consumption of 284 g/kWh as of January 2024, compared to 601 g/KWh in January 2020. The efficiency improvement in the last four years is significantly larger than the traditional banking sector’s, managing to reduce emissions by 2.9% in the same time frame.
Coinciding with Biden’s laser-eyed message, this could imply a positive shift in the Presidential administration’s outlook on the leading digital asset. However, it’s fair to say that Biden didn’t clarify the meaning behind the stunning message or respond to any of the crypto aficionado’s comments.
