In the electrifying showdown of UFC 300, held amidst the glitz and glamor of Las Vegas, a spectacle unfolded as 12 reigning and former champions graced the octagon. Among the thunderous roar of the sold-out crowd at the iconic T-Mobile Arena, the canvas bore witness to a series of upsets and century-defining clashes. However, amidst the chaos of combat, emerged a winner from the fray with a bold proposal: getting paid in crypto, particularly Bitcoin.
UFC’s Bitcoin Bonus?
Brazilian UFC fighter Renato Moicano came out victorious over Jalin Turner at UFC 300 on Saturday night. In a surprising twist, Moicano made a rather unusual request. The fighter asked for the $300,000 Performance of the Night bonus to be paid in Bitcoin, hours before the organization decided.

While it remains uncertain whether the UFC would have honored his request, main-card fighter Max Holloway ultimately secured the bonus following his impressive win against Justin Gaethje. UFC commentator Joe Rogan described the finish as the “KO of the century”, while the promotion’s president Dana White likened it to a “scene from a movie”.
Despite not securing the bonus, Moicano delivered an unusual speech following his victory over Jalin Turner.
“First of all, I love America, I love the Constitution, I love the First Amendment, I want to carry and own guns, I love property. And let me tell you something, if you care about your country, read Ludwig Von Mises and the Six Lessons of the Austrian Economic School.” Moicano shared.
Moicano urged everyone to read Ludwig Von Mises’s book, which many believe laid the groundwork for Bitcoin. Von Mises is renowned for his insights into inflation and its impact on global economies.
Bitcoin, as an asset, while still nascent, is capable of addressing a plethora of issues Mises notes in his book, acting as a hedge against inflation.
On the Flipside
- UFC has inked agreements with select fighters, like UFC flyweight contender Matheus Nicolau, to make payments in Bitcoin.
- In 2022, UFC aimed to feature its fights in the metaverse. Despite UFC President Dana White’s announcements, no updates have emerged on this initiative.
Why This Matters
Bitcoin is emerging as a solid asset class and is slowly creeping its way into mainstream media. Although the UFC’s transition to paying fighters in crypto remains uncertain, Moicano’s speech and request will likely sow the seeds for further consideration.
