In a wild turn of events, cybercriminals took over Tiffany and Lara Trumpโs X accounts on September 3, 2024. The compromised accounts shared messages about Donald Trumpโs new decentralized finance venture, World Liberty Financial.
However, this so-called World Liberty token was a counterfeit meme coin launched on Solana (SOL). In a now-deleted tweet on Lara Trump’s account, the fake tokenโs smart contract address was shared as one of the โonly official channelsโ related to World Liberty. โI believe my father and brother are carrying out the long-needed, important works needed to decentralize the financial world,โ reads the erased message.
Trump Family Members Weigh in to Warn Fans
After numerous tweets from Lara Trumpโs account, the hackers endorsed the fake $WL token through Tiffanyโs X account. Tiffany’s messages supported Lara’s announcement in a sly attempt to create legitimacy for the counterfeit meme coin.
Hours later, Lara Trumpโs husband, Eric Trump, warned his X audience that all these messages from Lara and Tiffanyโs accounts were fake. Additionally, Eric praised X customer support for handling the issue in minutes and urged Trump fans not to fall for these tricks.
Unfortunately, the counterfeit $WL token on Solana garnered immediate attention from Trump family followers. Multiple crypto enthusiasts on X pointed this out. They confirmed that โpeople jumped on it right away,โ especially after social influencer Caitlyn Jenner endorsed the fake $WL token to 3.3 million of her followers.
On the Flipside
- Some people believe it was an inside job, as Donald Trumpโs official X account had previously shared the same website.
- Despite the smooth resolution of this issue by Xโs team, itโs unknown how much damage was done during the incident.
Why This Matters
As celebrity hacks are on the rise, itโs important to understand the mechanics of these cyber crimes and the magnitude of responsibility for those affected.
