St. Peterโ€™s Chapel in Switzerland is offering its visitors a futuristic art installation of an AI-powered Jesus Christ. The AI project is now live in Lucerne, a historical mountainous town with over 81,000 residents.

The AI Jesus is dubbed Deus in Machina. It sits behind a screen in the confession booth, giving advice and philosophically answering questions, with answers in over 100 languages. Deus In Machina is a collaboration between computer scientists, artificial intelligence engineers, and theologists.

Hereโ€™s How Deus in Machina Blesses Visitors

Powered by the New Testament, the artificial intelligence Jesus Christ gives advice on finding God, breaking the cycle of violence, and even the thorniest theological dilemmas, like the euthanasia of sick elderly people. โ€œYour task is not to judge, but to accompany with love, ” AI Jesus was quoted as saying.

When asked about breaking the cycle of violence, the animated NFT-like Jesus calmly stated, โ€œThe answer is through prayer and not seeking retribution.โ€ The parish in St. Peterโ€™s Church aims to help people find God by providing an interactive educational resource for researching Christianity.

However, prominent theologists, such as Lucerne University’s native Professor Peter Kirchschlรคger, conclude that the machine behind the exhibition lacks the moral justification to properly represent the core beliefs and practices of the Christian faith.

Until December, the exhibition greets visitors with โ€œPeace be with you, brother,โ€ regardless of gender. It follows up with one of the Bibleโ€™s most used aphorisms: โ€œIn times of uncertainty and doubt, remember that faith can move mountains.โ€

The hundreds of theologians within the team, led by Philipp Haslbauer and Aljosa Smolic of the Immersive Realities Center, encouraged people to think critically about the installation, affirming that the animated Jesus isnโ€™t intended to replace the real one.

  • The artificial intelligence-based engine has a warning before visitors enter: โ€œDo not disclose personal information under any circumstances, use this service at your own risk, press the button if you accept.โ€
