Elon Musk signaled on October 21 that a merger between SpaceX and Tesla is a “good idea,” speaking during SpaceX’s Q3 2026 earnings call.
Neither company has disclosed a merger agreement, special committee, or letter of intent. If implemented, the deal would join two Nasdaq-listed giants valued at roughly $1.75 trillion (SPCX) and $1.6 trillion (TSLA).

When asked directly on the call whether combining his two primary ventures made sense, Musk was clear: “Do I think it would be a good idea? Yes.” He stressed that the decision was not his alone, adding that ultimately, shareholders would have to support the deal.

The consolidation talk coincides with record financial performance for SpaceX. Following its public listing under ticker SPCX in June 2026, the company reported Q3 revenue of $14.58 billion, a 161% year-over-year increase.
Growth was anchored by its Super Intelligence (SI) computing segment ($7.56B) and Starlink Connectivity services ($5.2B). Net income reached $4.4 billion, reversing a $1.1 billion net loss from the prior-year period.
Operational ties between the two entities have expanded rapidly. The companies currently co-develop the Terafab AI chip facility at Gigafactory Texas, while SpaceX’s Grok AI is integrated across Tesla’s vehicle fleet and Optimus robotics program.
Governance Is the Sticking Point
Combining two listed giants valued at a combined $3.35 trillion presents significant corporate governance challenges:
Both companies are public, so Musk cannot approve a merger alone. Approval would require a vote from both boards and both sets of shareholders.
Musk holds about 82% of SpaceX’s voting power through supervoting shares, but only around 20% of Tesla’s equity. An all-stock deal at current valuations could carry his SpaceX voting structure into the combined company. That would give him far more control over Tesla’s assets than he has today.
The proposal could also draw opposition from political leaders concerned about Musk’s growing corporate influence and the prospect of consolidating his businesses under a single corporate structure.
