
Solana (SOL) could be on the verge of a major breakthrough. The network’s validators are currently voting on the Alpenglow upgrade, a proposal that would slash block finality from 12.8 seconds to as little as 100–150 milliseconds, bringing near Web2-level performance to the blockchain.

Alpenglow upgrade (SIMD-0326) would replace the existing TowerBFT and Proof-of-History consensus mechanisms with a new protocol called Votor, “a lightweight, direct-vote-based protocol that finalizes blocks using either a single or dual-round voting process, depending on network conditions”, as per Solana developers.

By shifting to off-chain voting and signature aggregation, Alpenglow reduces bandwidth, cuts transaction fees, and streamlines block validation. Validators will pay a 1.6 SOL fee per epoch to participate.

The vote will run in three steps: two weeks of discussion (epochs 833–838), stake verification in epoch 839, and a one-week voting window (epochs 840–842). Approval requires a two-thirds majority.
Supporters call Alpenglow the most significant upgrade in Solana’s history, saying it will boost speed, efficiency, and security. Critics, however, argue the validator fee could block new entrants and warn that more testing is needed before rollout.
If passed, Alpenglow would mark a fundamental shift in Solana’s architecture, making it faster, more resilient, and better equipped to handle real-time applications from DeFi to gaming.
