  • Gracy Chen has been a vocal advocate for gender inclusion in the industry.
  • The United Nations is pushing for increased female participation in leadership.

Over the past years, gender bias across technology-driven industries has remained a prevalent issue, characterized by the dominance of men and the underrepresentation of women. This has prompted the need for initiatives to foster a more inclusive and balanced ecosystem, sparking conversations among industry leaders and inclusion advocates.

Joining the efforts is crypto exchange Bitget, which recently joined the United Nations to spotlight and address these challenges head-on.

Themed “Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective,” the conference aimed to promote inclusivity across cultural, social, and economic aspects while leveraging technology and storytelling for global cooperation.

Gracy Chen, along with numerous female industry thought leaders, highlighted the need for policies and programs that address gender inequalities, boost women’s involvement in leadership, and close gender gaps in employment.

Reflecting on her participation, the Bitget Managing Director emphasized the exchange’s commitment to a future marked by equity and inclusion within the crypto industry.

“I am inspired by the commitment of participants to drive positive change globally, and I look forward to applying the learnings from this event to further Bitget's mission of fostering diversity and empowerment within the crypto community,” she stated.

Chen and Bitget’s contributions align with their consistent emphasis on the need for a gender-balanced ecosystem.

In January 2024, Bitget conducted a study into the predominance of gender bias in blockchain startup funding, where over 90% of funding goes to male-led projects. The study highlighted the concerning difference in the success of male-led startups compared to female-led ones, with the latter only raising $1.77 billion compared to $27.85 billion.

Bitget further spotlighted investor bias as the primary contributing factor to the disparity in funding for female-led startups, resulting in a 45.2% decline in women-led initiatives since 2022.

Gracy Chen has also underscored the persistent gender bias against women, highlighting the importance of more pathways for women to thrive within the ecosystem. Speaking to DailyCoin last December, the Bitget MD asserted the need to nurture more female-founded startups and create a more supportive environment for their development.

Chen currently heads a team of 40% female employees and encourages women to step up to leadership roles to promote a gender-inclusive ecosystem.

On the Flipside

  • According to a 2023 report, only three out of the top 50 CEOs in the crypto industry are women.
  • Opportunities in the crypto industry are highly inclusive, and increasing gender equality can open up new career options for women.
  • Per a study conducted in January 2024, the rate of crypto ownership by women has recently surged from 18% to 29%.

Why This Matters

The extensive disparity in the representation of men and women across tech-driven industries, such as crypto, demands robust and comprehensive measures to effectively bridge the gap. These ongoing conversations are crucial to creating and fostering an inclusive ecosystem.
