Bitcoin Falls 5% as Profit Taking Reaches Second-Highest Level of 2026

Bitcoin recorded approximately $1.03 billion in realized profits in a single day, marking the second-highest daily total of 2026, according to on-chain analytics firm Santiment.

The surge followed Bitcoin’s climb to $87,000 and came as BTC subsequently retreated toward $81,000. Bitcoin also fell 5% over the week, while long liquidations reached $520 million, adding to signs of pressure on bullish market positions.

Data Shows Near-Record Realized Profits

Santiment reported that Bitcoin holders realized approximately $1.03 billion in profits as the cryptocurrency came under pressure following its recent rally. The figure represents the second-largest daily realized profit total recorded in 2026, according to the analytics firm.

Network realized profit and loss tracks the gains or losses investors lock in when Bitcoin moves on-chain. Sharp increases suggest many holders are selling at a profit, offering insight into market selling pressure beyond price movements alone.

Bitcoin fell 5% over the week, with long liquidations totaling around $520 million.

Why Profit Spikes Often Coincide With Cooling

According to Santiment, large jumps in realized profit frequently appear around short- to mid-term market cooling periods. Heavy profit-taking adds sell-side pressure, and falling prices can push traders to close positions or trigger liquidations of leveraged ones.

The firm says the data “does not guarantee a major reversal,” but calls $1.03 billion in realized profits a clear sign that Bitcoin’s recent rise is being tested.

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs also saw a cooldown this week, following one of their largest capital inflows in 12 months in late September. According to SoSoValue, spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded more than $702 million in outflows this week.

Why This Matters

Bitcoin’s large realized-profit days show how many holders are selling into strength, which can affect short-term price direction. Whether BTC stabilizes or extends its decline will depend on subsequent price action and whether selling pressure persists.
