- US spot Bitcoin and Ether ETFs both logged outflows for consecutive weeks.
Bitcoin is approaching a potential volatility breakout on Monday, October 19, with Barchart data showing its Bollinger Band Width among the tightest readings in 2.5 years. Total crypto market capitalization edged up 0.2% to about $2.839 trillion, but altcoin weakness, shrinking stablecoin supply and negative ETF flows leave traders unsure whether the market is stabilizing or preparing for a bigger move.
Bollinger Bands Narrow as Seasonality Draws Attention

Financial market data and analysis company Barchart reported on X that Bitcoin’s Bollinger Band Width is among its tightest readings in the past 2.5 years.
The technical indicator measures how far prices move around a moving average. Narrowing bands show that volatility has contracted, but they do not indicate whether the next move will be up or down.
“Bitcoin coiling and could be gearing up for a big move,” the company stated.
Crypto analyst Fred Krueger pointed to seasonality in a post on X. He said the next six weeks have historically been among the most favorable periods of the year for Bitcoin, expecting BTC could rise in late October and November.
According to his figures, October finished higher in 10 of the past 13 years, with a median return of 13%. November was positive in eight of the past 12 years, with a median return of 11%. “The calendar is the bull case,” he wrote, dubbing the stretch “Moonvember.”
Altcoins Hit Hardest by the Sell-Off
However, the recent market data paints a more cautious picture. In its weekly crypto market update on X, 10x Research reported that the 141 coins it tracks fell 14% on average ast week, while Bitcoin lost approximately 3%.
The firm also cited lower trading volumes, a shrinking stablecoin supply and negative ETF flows. SoSoValue data shows US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded outflows for a second straight week, with more than $228M leaving last week. US spot Ether ETFs posted a third consecutive week of outflows, totaling nearly $320M.
Glassnode noted that the typical altcoin fell more than 5% during the weekend sell-off as equity market concerns spilled into crypto. If the weekend ended at those levels, it would mark the largest weekend decline since April. The firm added that, since Bitcoin’s June low, buying on Friday and selling on Sunday had been profitable.
A breakout from the current range could bring a sharper move. Its direction will depend on economic conditions, liquidity and investor positioning.
Why This Matters
Tight volatility can precede larger price moves, and with altcoins under pressure and ETF flows negative, Bitcoin’s next breakout may set the tone for the broader market.
