Visa Crypto Labs has unveiled Visa CLI, a command-line interface that allows autonomous software agents and developers to execute card payments directly from a terminal. The tool is part of Visa’s push into machine-driven commerce and programmable payment infrastructure.

Visa’s Head of Crypto Labs, Cuy Sheffield, highlighted the release on X, calling it the first experimental product from the lab.

Streaming Payments for Bots

The Visa CLI enables AI programs and scripts to trigger payments without human oversight. Developers can integrate payments for services such as image generation APIs, data feeds, cloud computing, or subscription tools directly into automated workflows.

Unlike traditional APIs, Visa CLI does not require managing separate API keys, simplifying the process of embedding transactional capabilities into software.

Visa Crypto Labs said the tool is designed to help developers experiment with agent-driven commerce, where machines can act as independent economic actors.

If successful, such type of technology could accelerate autonomous commerce, enabling programs to handle routine purchases or operational payments with minimal human input.

Experimental Public Release

Visa CLI is currently in beta, with access controlled through GitHub authentication. The tool is intended as a sandbox for developers and enterprises to explore AI-powered payment workflows safely.

Visa described the release as an experimental step to test practical applications of machine-initiated transactions before scaling.

Implications for AI and Crypto Integration

The CLI launch highlights a growing trend toward autonomous finance, blending AI and traditional payment systems. While Visa is primarily focused on card-based transactions, the technology could eventually intersect with blockchain and crypto-enabled payments.

Enabling bots to transact independently may reshape sectors like cloud computing, subscription services, and decentralized finance.

On the Flipside

  • Machine-initiated payments introduce challenges around security, compliance, and risk management.

Why This Matters

Visa Crypto Labs’ CLI tool goes beyond just a new developer utility. It’s a concrete step toward autonomous, machine-driven commerce, with implications across fintech, AI, and crypto ecosystems.
