Trump’s Crypto Meeting Ignites a $215 Billion Altcoin Surge

Altcoins added roughly $215 billion in market value over three days after President Donald Trump signaled fresh support for US crypto policy and said the government had discussed buying “sizable” amounts of Bitcoin and other digital assets.

The August 19 White House meeting with crypto executives triggered a sharp, broad rebound across the market. Bitcoin moved back above $70,000, Ethereum briefly pushed past $2,300, and the total crypto market capitalization climbed before giving back part of the advance in subsequent trading.

Policy expectations drove the first wave

Trump called for Congress to pass a “fair” version of the CLARITY Act and said the United States should remain the global leader in Bitcoin, crypto, prediction markets and artificial intelligence. The remarks arrived as regulators were already examining possible exemptions and frameworks for parts of the digital-asset sector.

Traders appeared to treat the comments as a shift in Washington’s tone rather than a confirmed policy package. No formal government purchase plan, legislative breakthrough or new regulatory approval was announced, but the prospect of a more accommodating environment was enough to force a rapid repricing across major tokens.

Ethereum was among the clearest beneficiaries, rising about 18% in 24 hours during the initial move as trading activity and liquidations accelerated. The rally reportedly wiped out more than $3 billion in leveraged positions, illustrating how heavily positioned traders had been caught leaning against the market.

Altcoins ran harder, but confirmation remains elusive

Mid-cap and smaller tokens outperformed Bitcoin during the rebound, lifting the market capitalization of cryptocurrencies excluding Bitcoin above $1 trillion. More than half of the altcoins tracked on a major exchange were trading above their 200-day moving averages, a marked improvement from the prolonged weakness seen since late last year.

Hyperliquid’s HYPE token also surged as attention turned to the possibility of a compliant US route for on-chain derivatives. Still, discussion of a regulatory pathway does not amount to authorization for US operations, leaving the token especially exposed to reversals in sentiment.

The stronger breadth has revived talk of an altcoin season, yet the usual confirmation signals have not fully arrived. Bitcoin dominance remained near 60%, above the level many market participants view as necessary for a sustained rotation into lower-cap assets. The Altcoin Season Index also remained below the threshold associated with broad outperformance versus Bitcoin.
