S&P Launches Crypto Index That Snubs Tokens Without Revenue

S&P Dow Jones and Pantera Capital’s new benchmark weighs ETH, SOL and BNB by protocol revenue, not price momentum.

S&P Pantera Digital Asset Index Ranks Crypto by Revenue, Not Hype

S&P Dow Jones Indices and Pantera Capital are betting that investors will increasingly judge crypto assets by business fundamentals rather than speculation.

The world’s leading index provider and digital asset investment firm launched the S&P Pantera Digital Asset Index (SPPDA) on July 21, 2026, an 18-constituent benchmark that selects digital assets based on the revenue generated by their underlying blockchain networks and weights them by adjusted market capitalization.

The launch comes as institutional investors have increasingly sought regulated ways to gain exposure to digital assets beyond Bitcoin and Ether. Traditional index providers have moved deeper into crypto markets as asset managers look for benchmarks that resemble conventional equity and commodity products.

Which Tokens Are In the Index?

According to the index brochure, Ether (ETH), Binance Coin (BNB), Solana (SOL), Tron (TRX), and Hyperliquid (HYPE) are the five largest current holdings, weighted by float-adjusted market capitalization.

However, launch materials did not disclose the full list of 18 constituents.

Pantera has cited Hyperliquid (HYPE), Solana (SOL), and Aave (AAVE) as examples of protocols that meet the index’s revenue-based criteria, although the full constituent list was not disclosed in launch materials.

How Does the S&P Pantera Digital Asset Index Select Crypto Assets?

The S&P Pantera Digital Asset Index builds on the existing S&P Cryptocurrency Broad Digital Asset Index, filtering for protocols that generated positive revenue in the previous two fiscal quarters.

Eligible assets are ranked by trailing two-quarter revenue and included until they represent up to 99% of revenue generated by the eligible universe.

They must meet a minimum market capitalization of $500 million and liquidity (above 0.5 ratio) requirements, while meme coins and inactive projects are excluded.

Each asset’s weight is based on its adjusted market capitalization, with limits in place to reduce concentration risk. The largest holding is capped at 35%, while all other holdings are capped at 20%.

The index rebalances quarterly, effective after the close on the third Friday of March, June, September, and December.

Lukka Inc. provides pricing and reference data, while Artemis Analytics supplies revenue and supply data used in the selection process. The index comes under the ticker SPPDA.

A Push Toward Fundamentals-Based Crypto Investing

Pantera Capital said the index’s 18 constituents generated a combined $3 billion in annualized protocol revenue over the trailing two quarters.

The firm compared the launch to the 1957 debut of the S&P 500, arguing that crypto markets have historically focused more on price performance and market capitalization than underlying protocol economics.

Pantera argues that the number of revenue-generating blockchain projects has expanded enough to support a fundamentals-based benchmark.

“With the S&P Pantera Digital Asset Index, we bring that same discipline to digital assets, using a fundamentals-driven, economics-based framework built for diversified portfolios,” said Cathy Clay, CEO of S&P Dow Jones Indices.

On the Flipside

  • Critics argue that protocol revenue does not necessarily translate into token appreciation and that a revenue-based framework may favor certain blockchain business models while overlooking assets whose value depends on factors such as network effects, security, monetary characteristics, or adoption.

Why This Matters

The index represents a shift in how Wall Street may evaluate crypto assets. Instead of treating tokens primarily as speculative instruments, the methodology applies a framework closer to traditional equity analysis: identifying networks that generate measurable economic activity.

Whether that approach gains adoption among asset managers will depend on whether protocol revenue proves to be a reliable measure of long-term token value and investment performance. Yet the SPPDA’s value could serve as the basis for future ETFs or other products that track revenue-based crypto segment.
