Gem Wallet Features
With Gem Wallet, of course, storing cryptocurrency is the aim of the game, but the app also allows users to buy and sell crypto with its fiat onramp, specifically designed to be easy to use.
Gem Wallet also branches into the realm of NFTs, allowing users who are initially unfamiliar with these unique tokens, such as myself, to at least browse them and get an idea of their worth and value on the open marketplace.
Another type of market that Gem Wallet offers is its Dapp selection. Dapps can expand how investors interact with our digital assets, such as allowing for borrowing and lending. By having so many of them on offer, users can gradually dive deeper into the Dapp arena only when they feel ready.
On top of all this, Gem Wallet also possesses a few extra and quite unique features related to wallet management, specifically how it allows for multiple wallets to be stored on the same interface, which prevented me from having to juggle numerous apps at once.
To summarize, Gem Wallet starts with the basic features of storing, buying, and selling crypto, but if investors want to go further, they can explore several other more complex features, too, granting them the ability to progress in their crypto journey simply by using the wallet itself.
Most Polished Feature: Dapp Browser
Dapps are usually an aspect of crypto that investors will only use after familiarizing themselves with the basics of trading, despite their numerous benefits.
Thanks to its built-in WalletConnect protocol, Gem Wallet might be the most accessible way to experience and use dApps. This allows all Gem Wallet investors to browse and download a wide range of Dapps and DeFi apps, from social messengers to games to financial tools.
All investors need to do is scan a QR code correlated with the Dapp to the Gem Wallet, and the coins will immediately be added for them to enjoy.
It needs to be mentioned that this level of Dapp simplicity isnโt the everyday norm in the world of crypto. Very often, Dapps will take the form of browser extensions, which can be easily forgotten about while also taking up a good chunk of memory, depending on their size.
Therefore, they can easily scare away those new to crypto, but Gem Wallet is making them much more appealing and accessible, allowing investors to test them out without even needing to leave the app.
Trading Options
Gem Wallet can almost be considered a light exchange in and of itself, considering the extensive trading options that it offers its users.
The mobile app’s easygoing interface and clearly defined menus allow users to buy, sell, send, and receive crypto without any hassle.
Gem Walletโs on/off ramp feature is so simple that it negates the need to balance multiple exchanges to start buying and selling several crypto tokens.
Users can start acquiring crypto by simply pressing the โBuyโ button and choosing from one of the numerous payment options. Most wallets are a little strict about how users can add their fiat money to start purchasing crypto, but Gem Wallet offers everything from credit and debit/credit cards to Apple Pay, Google Pay, and even Revolut Pay.
Gem Wallet also allows for on-chain swaps, which are just as straightforward as regular buying and selling, much more so than other wallets in my personal experience. Additionally, Gem Walletโs crypto can be swapped at good rates thanks to the inclusion of well-known swap providers like 1inch and PancakeSwap, meaning there are no hidden charges or inflated spreads impacting the overall price.
Gem Wallet also supports NFT transactions, allowing you to easily buy, sell, or seek out the value for a particular token to potentially add to your digital collection, which can be fully managed on the app itself.
You wonโt be getting any more advanced trading offerings like derivatives, spots, and futures, which prevents the wallet from being a straight-up replacement for exchanges. However, it nonetheless features all the most basic quick and easy trading options.
Tools
Letโs examine some of the appโs built-in tools, which can expand the ways in which users can use their crypto.
Gem Wallet supports native staking for 14 tokens, including Tron (TON), Solana (SOL), and Sei (SEI). Staking on Gem Wallet involves picking a token, scrolling down to the โStakeโ option, and then choosing a validator; it really is that simple. In my experience with staking, Gem Wallet has been the easiest to use and offers one of the largest staking token selections.
Staking these tokens will earn the investor passive income over time without needing to be actively trading. I personally found this feature extremely beneficial as a way to continue earning without having to approach the chaotic and complex crypto market.
Gem Wallet also provides a useful staking calculator that can determine approximately how much can be earned from staking a specific token over time. On average, though, this is how the APY stands for some of the most popular tokens:
- SOL – 7.80%
- SUI – 5.30%
- BNB – 3.77%
- ATOM – 13.94%
- SEI – 4.80%
- TIA – 16%
Another handy tool is Gem Walletโs unique Advanced Wallet Management system. This works in two ways. First, it allows users to store multiple wallets on the same app, preventing experimental investors who have their hands in several markets, such as myself, from needing to jump between applications to keep track of funds.
The second part of this feature allows users to โWatchโ a wallet without using a private key, or in other words, without needing to open the wallet itself. Many investors worry about the risks of their private keys being exposed by scammers, but this becomes less of an issue when using the Wallet Watch feature. Additionally, itโs beneficial for investors who want to see all their funds while on the go.
Supported Cryptos
Alongside its accessibility, Gem Walletโs range of supported crypto is another area where it shines. The team has taken extra consideration in including the big tokens and ones that have only started generating buzz over the last few years.
As a result, Gem Wallet supports major players like Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) but also includes the likes of Toncoin (TON), Sui (SUI), and Fantom (FTM), to name a few. It also provides many stablecoin currencies, including USD Coin (USDC) and Tether (USDT).
Gem Wallet supports over 30 blockchains and tens of thousands of tokens.
Therefore, most investors wonโt need to worry about their favorite token being left out, thanks to the plentiful selection on offer here.
Costs and Incentives
Download Gem Wallet from the Google Play or Apple store for free, which is extremely generous given how much is packed into this one platform.
There is currently no fee for using Dapps services with Gem Wallet, but this could be introduced in the future.
Itโs worth noting, though, that if you are planning to make a crypto transaction, especially when exchanging larger sums, you may be expected to pay a network fee according to the blockchain in question. This can differ greatly between each network, so if youโre unsure, researching how expensive the gas fees are through dedicated gas websites can be worth researching.
User Experience
Performance
The Gem Wallet app boasts an easy-going interface that even the greenest crypto newcomers can familiarize themselves with in little to no time.
Navigating between menus is rarely sluggish, and the app features plenty of search bars to help users find specific tokens for buying, selling, or staking.
Though many wallet apps can seem a bit too commercial with the many ads and prompts they shove in users’ faces, Gem Wallet opts for a more streamlined and simple UI, leaving behind all the clutter to provide a straightforward and easygoing experience.
Itโs not hard to see why Gem Wallet has retained a 5-star rating on Google Play since it was first introduced, considering how far out of its way it goes to create a comfortable environment for newcomers rather than scaring them away with technical jargon and an abundance of menus.
Customer Service
When it comes to customer support, crypto wallets and even exchanges often struggle to provide enough reliable options for investors to choose from.
Gem Wallet is in a pretty similar position. There are certainly still ways to contact the team when encountering issues, but the response times can vary widely from person to person.
Gem Wallet users can reach out by sending an email to support@gemwallet.com, or for urgent security issues, can instead try security@gemwallet.com. In my experience, it takes a few days before hearing anything back after sending a query, which isnโt a huge help for fast day traders.
The Gem Wallet team can also be contacted on their social media accounts, which can be found in the Systems menu, but the waiting time for a response is very unpredictable.
I found X and Discord to be the most reliable, while GitHub and YouTube were less promising.
Thankfully, Gem Wallet still has an extensive FAQ section and a full tutorial of the platform on its website, which covers most common issues reported in the past.
Security
Gem Wallet is self-custodial, meaning all users will retain ownership of their key to access their funds. This does admittedly put a lot of responsibility on the user since losing a private key will lock them out of their funds. Still, it also bolsters security since cyberattackers wonโt have a central database they can expose.
The Gem Wallet team promises never to use any form of tracking, so they wonโt store personally identifiable information like asset balances or which dApps people are using on their personal computers, providing full financial privacy.
When signing up for Gem Wallet, you also donโt need to provide personal details or images of yourself since it doesnโt require KYC (Know Your Customer) information.
To ensure the wallet runs smoothly for all users, thereโs also a bug bounty security feature. Technical issues can be reported in exchange for rewards, usually a small sum of tokens.
Multi-factor authentication is also supported to provide extra protection against external attackers.
Transparency
Gem Wallet is an open-source crypto wallet, meaning anyone is allowed to verify and test the coding to get an idea of how secure it is. This provides transparency by allowing users to test the walletโs code for themselves to seek out potential holes or vulnerabilities, which can then be tinkered with to make the wallet more secure.
Methodology
- Review Period: 1 week.
- Testing Included: Hands-on experience with the mobile app, experimenting with extra features, and testing wallet storage capabilities.
I tested Gem Wallet over the course of a week. During this period, I aimed to test out and experiment with every feature the wallet offers. I also tested buying and selling crypto and staking small amounts to understand how the process worked. As someone with much experience with crypto wallets, I approached this product with a clear idea of what should be included and what elements could help make it stand out from the competition.
