Korean Pop Band Blackpink Wins Best Metaverse Performance at MTV VMAs

MTV is surely keeping up with the times with the first-ever Best Metaverse Performance Award

Korean Pop Band Blackpink Wins Best Metaverse Performance at MTV VMAs

MTV Video Music Awards, the biggest annual music video competition, has introduced the inaugural edition of the Best Metaverse Performance Award. Blackpink, the South Korean Pop girl band, surprised the audience with a magnificent performance not on stage, but inside the PUBG Mobile game.

Gigs in the Metaverse Are Becoming a Trend

Despite delivering the first-ever award for the Best Metaverse Performance, MTV is not the first one with the idea to set up a gig in the metaverse. Previously, well-known rapper Travis Scott performed in Fortnite. The Sci-Fi style and super realistic graphics have left many Hip Hop fans pleasantly surprised.

Two years later, the girl band Blackpink is making headlines with a performance in another major game. And now, the public recognition for performances in Web3 has elevated to levels never seen before.

There’s been plenty of moments in pop culture that predicted the rise of the metaverse. As a representative of MTV VMAs puts it: “We saw the opportunity to highlight and honor some of the best, most impactful executions of this – and celebrate artists who have found creative ways to use these spaces – which led to the addition of Best Metaverse Category this year.”

Ariana Grande Fans Are Wiping Their Tears

Moreover, the first-ever Best Metaverse Performance award by MTV has seen some serious competition. The Korean Pop girl band had to take the throne from Ariana Grande, even though many of her fans don’t see it as fair. Ariana Grande performed in Fortnite, while other competitors include Justin Bieber for his Wave performance, Twenty-One Pilots in Roblox, and BTS in Minecraft. While the last two cannot compete against the quality of the visuals of either Fortnite and PUBG, the backlash from fans of Ariana Grande’s loss makes some sense.

However, the fans decided, as Blackpink received over 320 votes worldwide. Check out their performance below:
