Ethereum developers have committed to bringing native Account Abstraction (AA) to the network in the upcoming Hegotá upgrade, but the technology’s final design is still being debated.

The decision became clearer on Friday after EIP-8141, known as Frame Transactions, moved from “Considered” to “Scheduled” for Hegotá. The move signals that Account Abstraction is now a priority for the upgrade, although developers could still replace or substantially modify the current proposal before launch.

Why Does Ethereum Want Account Abstraction for Hegotá?

Account Abstraction would make Ethereum wallets more programmable and give users more flexibility over how they manage transactions.

Today, most Ethereum wallets require users to protect a private key or seed phrase, while transaction fees generally have to be paid in ETH. Smart accounts enabled by Account Abstraction could support features such as social recovery, alternative ways to pay fees and more complex transaction execution.

For users, that could make Ethereum wallets easier to use and less dependent on the traditional seed-phrase model.

EIP-8141 was initially proposed as a major feature for Hegotá and entered the “Considered” stage in March. Its move to “Scheduled” means developers intend to deliver Account Abstraction as part of the upgrade.

However, “Scheduled” does not mean the current EIP-8141 design is final. Developers could still change the transaction format, architecture or even the EIP used to implement Account Abstraction.

Could EIP-8130 Reshape Ethereum’s Account Abstraction Design?

EIP-8130 has emerged as an alternative to EIP-8141 as Ethereum developers work to establish a common Account Abstraction standard across the network and its Layer 2 chains.

Unlike EIP-8141, which gives wallets greater flexibility by treating transactions as programmable instructions, EIP-8130 uses a stricter, predefined structure. This allows nodes to verify gas payments upfront, potentially making Account Abstraction more efficient and safer for high-throughput Layer 2 networks.

EIP-8130 has gained traction in recent weeks and is scheduled for deployment on Base in September. Its progress has intensified the debate over how Ethereum can prevent Layer 1 and Layer 2 networks from adopting incompatible Account Abstraction standards.

The goal is to create a system that gives Ethereum Layer 1 enough flexibility while allowing Layer 2 networks to process transactions efficiently and protect against denial-of-service attacks.

Developers are also exploring whether users could eventually use the same smart account across Ethereum and its Layer 2 networks, rather than managing separate account systems on each chain.

What Could Account Abstraction Change for Ethereum Users?

If Ethereum successfully implements native Account Abstraction, wallets could become significantly more flexible.

Users could eventually recover accounts without relying solely on a seed phrase, use different assets or mechanisms to cover transaction fees, and authorize more complex transactions through smart-account rules.

The impact could extend beyond wallets. A standardized Account Abstraction system could also make smart accounts more consistent across Ethereum’s growing Layer 2 ecosystem.
