  • The Chief Executive Officer behind Pixelcraft Studios, “Coder Dan”, has announced that players can now access Avegotchiย without having prior ownership of an ‘Avegotchi’ non-fungible token (NFT).
  • Pixelcraft Studios are the developers behind decentralized finance (DeFi) role-playing game (RPG) Aavegotchi Gotchiverse.

Aavegotchi, the open-source, community-owned, non-fungible token (NFT) gaming project developed by Pixelcraft Studios and built on the Polygon (MATIC) blockchain, will now allow any and all prospective players to access it with NFTs, according to an official statement by CEO “Coder Dan”.

An Exciting Announcement

Players will no longer need to buy Aavegotchi NFTs in order to gain access to the game after the mandatory requirement was rescinded, according to an official announcement posted on Aavegotchiโ€™s Twitter page.

The announcement also featured a video revealing the Aavegotchi Art Release event, scheduled for October 20th, 2022.

One of the features showcased as part of the virtual world was ‘NFT Displays’โ โ€”a way for Aavegotchi asset owners to customize and showcase the favorite NFTs from the collections in their wallets.

Accessing the Gotchiverse Without an NFT

Based on information from an official Aavegotchi blog post published on September 17th, 2022, players can now access the ‘Gotchiverse’ through what is known as an “Observoor” character.

These avatars spawn at parcels through the ‘Bounce Gates’, and can view NFT displays, chat with other players, and build within the virtual world. However, they will be unable to collect in-game resource Alchemica.

Following the update, new players will be able to connect their Web 3.0 wallet and choose the Observoor mode when prompted.

Players can think of the Gotchiverse as being an open-world, Play to Earn (P2E), NFT-based RPG governed by the players themselves.

So, what role do Aavegotchi NFTs play? Essentially, they are used as yield-generating tokens that double as digital pets for players to take care of, reminiscent of the classic Tamagotchi, as suggested by the name.

When it came out in September 2020, the game was originally built on the Ethereum (ETH) blockchain; in 2021, the project migrated to the Polygon (MATIC) blockchain.

Within this virtual world, players can harvest, craft, and battle their NFT Aavegotchis.

While the announcement doesnโ€™t clarify exactly who the project’s CEO is, based on the companyโ€™s data, it is clear that “Coder Dan” is the Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Pixelcraft Studios and Aavegotchi, and goes by coderdan.eth on Twitter.

On the Flipside

  • Aavegotchi NFTs previously acted as a ticket for entry to the game, which was one of the reasons they initially became popular, and have managed to retain their value. With the removal of this utility, demand for the NFTs could ultimately decrease.
  • By opening Aavegotchi to everyone, the game loses its exclusivity, which might have been considered a selling point in the minds of certain collectors.

Why You Should Care

By opening up Aavegotchi to everyone, the CEO behind the project is essentially looking to make the game and virtual world as inclusive as possible.

Now, anyone, even those who might not have felt comfortable with buying NFTs, or could not afford to do so, will be able to explore and experience everything the Aavegotchi Gotchiverse has to offer.

If this move proves to improve the popularity, value, and ultimate successfulness of the game, other projects may well follow suit in eliminating the exclusivity aspect of requiring NFTs to join, opening up GameFi as a whole to a much broader audience.
