PlayStation Surveys Players on NFTs at EVO 2022

Sony’s PlayStation has some plans for NFTs?

PlayStation Survey at EVO Asks Players What NFTs They’d Like to Buy

At EVO 2022, a survey by PlayStation asked players their thoughts and opinions on non-fungible tokens (NFTs). A Twitter user posted a screenshot of one of the questions from ‘PlayStation Quest’.

For context, Evo is an annual esports tournament with an exclusive focuse on fighting games. In 2021, Sony signed a deal to became a part-owner of the prestigious event.

At this year’s venue that PlayStation asked attendees about NFTs. Twitter user “Snorlax Ownz” tweeted one of the questions, which asked if respondents would be interested in purchasing NFTs or digital collectibles from the choices given.

NFTs and Video Games: An On-and-Off Affair

NFTs haven’t exactly been welcomed into the video games community with open arms, and leading companies like Valve and Electronic Arts have sworn off them entirely. On the other hand, industry giants Square Enix and Ubisoft decided to take the leap of faith, diving headfirst into NFTs.

To date, PlayStation had maintained neutral, making no determinations to either side. While the purpose of the PlayStation survey is not yet clear, many are speculating that the company is considering daliance with the tokens. Online discussions even suggest that the NFT survey may have something to do with ‘PlayStation Stars’.

Before anyone gets too excited though, it should be noted that a survey does not necessarily mean that PlayStation will act upon it, or even that it has any plans for an NFT collection. As experienced game industry analyst Daniel “ZhugeEX” Ahmad pointed out, the terms “digital collectibles” and “NFTs” are often used interchangeably.

On the Flipside

  • NFTs and their integration into video games have received mixed reactions from the gaming community. One example of this can be seen in the Twitter thread by “Snorlax Ownz”, which was filled with comments that did not look favorably upon NFTs.

Why You Should Care

  • Although the precise goal of the PlayStation survey is unclear, it could indicate discussions on the subject. PlayStation could potentially be assessing user interest in digital collectibles and/or NFTs, but nothing is certain at the time of writing.
  • While it’s too early to say anything, the questionnaire hints that video game companies are increasingly interested in testing the NFT waters, or at least researching alternate means of monetization.
